A subscriber asks why we're "advertising MASTERCARD on the Stewart
List." I'll answer that for all three lists, since you'll most likely
be seeing more such commercial taglines.

We are advertising not just MasterCard, but anyone who buys
advertising space from Rootsweb, because Rootsweb has asked us to do
it in order to defray the expenses of providing this free service to
genealogy researchers.

Mailing list managers have the option of allowing or disallowing these
commercial taglines. I disallowed them for a long time until 8 or 9
months ago when I decided it was in our best interests to help support
Rootsweb's expansion.

You probably never noticed them because there really weren't that
many. You will be seeing more now, I imagine, because RootsWeb has
been purchased by Ancestry.com, who more aggressively market
commercial advertising. We have been assured that all of the free
services available up to now will continue to be absolutely free, and
that nothing you contribute or post will ever be sold or misused.

If the mailing list subscribers want to revisit the issue of allowing
the commercial taglines, it's up to you. I'd prefer to hear from folks
PRIVATELY and OFF THE LIST since you know how many complaints get
generated by non-genealogy strings.

If there is a groundswell of opposition to the taglines, I can
disallow them. I really don't care one way or the other, though I do
think it's a good idea to support Rootsweb's services whenever we can.
