First off, keep in mind that there is no such thing as the Stewart/Stuart clan per se. There were a number of families in Scotland who took the name Stewart who were related to the old families, but also many, many others who simply adopted the name because of their profession (steward in a castle), or because the local laird was a Stewart. There was also a known McGregor family who adopted the name in Northern Ireland, and probably many more that have not been located.
It's a lovely idea that Stuart became Start, but ........ Stewarts/Stuarts worldwide seem to have one common denominator if no other: they are proud of their name! That's why, if you look at an atlas of the US, you will find so many little towns, rivers etc named Stuart, as well as many more land deeds calling certain lots Stuart-something. That doesn't mean much of course, but have you researched the origins of the name Start?

> -Hi; Great to see your query on this site. I too am supposed to descend from Mary, Queen of Scots. My gt. grandfather was Thomas Coke Stuart, from Seneca Co., Ohio who migrated to Indiana. His father however went by the name of Rev. Philip Start, who was born in Virginia according to the census. Philip married Sarah Jane Meyers and both are buried in Bucyrus, Ohio but not in the same cemetery as Sarah Jane remarried after Philip's death. Notice the u had been dropped from the Stuart name. It has been oral history that we descended from the Stuart clan but I have not been able to prove this as I am stuck on Philip Start. The story goes that when this Stuart family came to America they thought they would be hunted down and beheaded so they changed their name to Start. Good story don't you think. Their are Start's in Toledo, Ohio who descend from this same family but they did not change their name to Stuart. Can anyone help. Would appreciate any or all information on !
