Hello Stewart,
You mean this poor boy was saddled with a first name of Sir and middle
name of William??? !!!
Nothing in the Stewart Clan Magazine on him, but I suspect his
grandparents must have been the William Stewart son of James on page
E237 who married Frances Matilda Smith of Woodville, Mississipi. Does
that seem possible?
James was born 1763 in the Cape Fear River valley in NC, and m-1
Catherine Nolan (mother of his children), m-2 Jane--. He and his
brothers Charles and Duncan went to Montgomery Co. TN, locating in
Clarksville. "James remained in Montgomery County but is said to be
buried in Mississii, having died there while on a visit." His will was
dated 19 Apr 1818, probated in that couty 19 Oct 1818. The children of
James and Catherine, mentioned in his will:
Jennet, m. Alexander Dickson of Stewart Co. TN
Mary, m. John Hampton of Clarksville, d. before 1818
William, m. Frances Matilda Smith of Woodville, Miss.
Nolan, b. 16 Jun 1796, m. Elvira McCalop of Woodville, Miss, d. 1854
Robina E., m-1 Ben Rogers of Woodville, m-2 John Whitaker
James McDougal, said to have died young.
Nothing further is mentioned about William, nor his siblings. You might
want to see if there is any sign of Nolan or Robina E. Rogers/Whitaker
in Woodville, though.
The editor of the SCM has given ancestors to James, but it doesn't
really look right. He has James5 (this man), William4, Alexander3,
Patrick2, of the Stewarts of Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland, but
looking at the very next generation back, William4, on pageC189 (whose
wife was Jean McDougal), shows that this man's son James was supposed to
have married his cousin Elizabeth Stewart, daughter of Patrick Stewart
of Brown's Marsh. So it all looks a little murky.
Hope this helps a little bit,
Mary
