I am new to the list so don't know if any of you have this information. This
was sent to me by a cousin from another side of the family about film she
rented of the Southern Claims Commission records. After the War Between the
States, a commission was set up to hear claims from persons in the CSA who
suffered losses at the hands of Union soldiers but claimed they were loyal to
the Union. It got so out of hand with all the desperate people trying to get
compensation that the commission was shut down. Gary Mills published an index
several years ago of the claims which is in a lot of libraries. The film
comes through branch archives. Or hard copies may be ordered by following the
directions in the front of Mills' book.

If a person were really lucky, he would have
one like Joseph Stewart of DeKalb Co., GA, who had to name his five sons and
three son-in-laws who were Confederate soldiers. His wife, daughter, and
son-in-law testified and their relationship was stated. And he, his dau.
and son-in-law signed their names.
