Dear Fellow Researchers and Cousins,

I hope some of you may be able to help with this line. I am most
appreciative of any and all help.

This is what I have so far:

John Stuart/Stewart - Born about 1532, he was made Commendator of the Priory
of Coldingham in 1541. He obtained letters of legitimization under the Great
Seal 7 February 1550-51 and in 1560 joined the ranks of the Reformers. He
married 4 January 1561-2, at Crichton Castle, Jean HEPBURN, daughter of
Patrick, third Earl of Bothwell, and ultimate heiress of her brother James
Hepburn, Earl of Bothwell, Duke of Orkney, the third husband of Mary Queen
of Scots.

1. Francis Stuart, b. abt. 1563. Oldest son and heir. Godson of Queen Mary
and named after her first husband, Francis II of France. He married Margaret
Douglas, daughter of David seventh Earl of Angus.
Their children were:

1.a).Francis (sold much of his estate to the Winton family) and married
Isobel Setoun, widow of James, first Earl of Perth, daughter of Robert,
first Earl of Winton. (note - the Winton's can be traced to CT where Robert
Stuart of Norwalk lived and were still with our John Stuart in Catherine, NY
in 1850's).
Their children were:
1-a-1) Charles -dyed in England after Worcester, apparently unmarried
1-a-2) Robert - ?maybe our Robert who married 1661 Bethia Rumbell? Burke's
said he died in infancy.
1-a-3) Margaret
1-a-4) Elizabeth

1.b.) John Commendator of Coldingham m. Margaret Home
Their Children were:
Francis - He was said to be a private gentleman in the Horse Guards, who
commanded cavalry at Bothwell Brig 1679.
Margaret, married to Sir John Home of Renton.

1.c.) Harie b. 1612

1.d.) Frederick b. 1612

1.e.) Elizabeth m. James Cranstoun, second son of William, first Lord
Cranstoun

1.f.) Margaret m. Alan fifth Lord Cathcart

1.g.) Helen m. John MacFarland of Ilk

1.h.) Jean m. Robert Elliot of Redheugh.

2.Hercules Stuart of Whitelaw, Earl of Bothwell. Married Mary, youngest
daughter of Patrick Whitelaw.
Children:

2.a.) Margaret, m.10 March 1619, in Ireland, John Hamilton, son of Allan
Hamilton of Ferguslie.

2.b.) John Stuart

3. Margaret Stuart, m. William Sinclair.
