Marilyn Underwood and I have exchanged a couple of e-mails about this
question and I came up with a few theories, but it bugged me enough so
that I decided to do a more thorough search of it.

The "Black Stewart" was John Stewart, Sheriff of Bute, illegitimate
son of Robert II and Christian Leitch. John Stewart was born c. 1368.

He had two marriages, to Janet Sympil and Elizabeth Graham, and five
children.
