Subject: Stewart in Ireland

In census, my ggggrandfather has his fathers birth place as Ireland, no name,
no dates. His mother has N.Y. listed as her birth place, so I assume he came
from Ireland into N.Y. Process of elimination would put this date about early
1800s.
Need suggestions on how to go about finding info. Tried gggrandfathers birth
cert. in N.Y. but they don't have records that early. The son, Samuel Stewart,
eventually came to N.J. and married a local girl but can find no evidence of
the elder Stewart being in N.J. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Bev
