There has been a lot of questions about the date of the death of my GGGG-
Grandfather, General John Stewart of Oglethorpe Co., GA. His will dated 28 Aug
1828 was proved 7 Jul 1830. His grave stone which was erected long after his
death says 1830.
However, I found proof in the GA Archives that he died April 23, 1829. The
Savannah Georgian newspaper Vol. 148 dated Monday morning May 18, 1829 carried
the following announcement:
DIED
At his residence in Oglethorpe County (Geo.) on the 23d. alt. Gen. John
Stewart in the seventieth year of his age. He was one of that patriotic band
who fought for the liberties of his country, through the long war of the
revolution.
I also have the following article that I believe was in the Augusta, GA paper,
but I do not have the name of the paper or the date:
Departed this life at his residence in Oglethorpe county, on the 23d. ult.
General John Stewart; in the seventieth year of his age. He was one of that
patriotic band who fought for the liberties of his country, through the long
war of the Revolution. He was a kind husband--- a tender, and fond father---
and has left behind him a loving wife, and five affectionate children to
lament his loss---which alas! to them is irreparable one. Milledgeville
Statesman.
Any information that anyone has on the line of Gen. John Stewart or wife
Mourning Floyd Stewart would be appreciated.
