Thanks, Terry, for your plug for my "Wilkes County, GA Tax Records,
1785-1805" which
includes maps showing the changes in county boundaries brought about by the
creation of so many counties from original Wilkes County during the period.

For Harvey Carrouth's information, go to http://www.rootsweb.com/~gawilkes/
and click on Resources, then Book Reviews, then Full Reviews to see what this
two volume set of records contains. These records confirm that your Robert
Carruth was in Georgia in 1794, but reveal that he made tax returns as early
as 1793 in Wilkes County, and continued to make returns in Wilkes up to and
including 1796, always owning land on Dry Fork of Long Creek, a tributary of
Broad River. It is obvious that he moved to Oglethorpe County after the tax
returns were made in Wilkes for 1796, three years after Oglethorpe was
created.

I doubt that Robert Carruth saw any military service in Captain Abednego
Moore's Company of Col. Bailey's Regiment, other than an infrequent muster; he
was just a member of the Militia, as was every able bodied man within age
limits. The geographic area of a Militia District Company was by law the
taxing district. It is possible that he was called out in a detachment to put
down the Indians who were raiding in the 1790s, but I do not find him in a
quick look at NARA Publication M1745 Claims for Georgia Militia Campaigns
against Frontier Indians 1792-1827. Most of these detachments were made up of
young men.

Good Luck in your research. Frank Parker Hudson
