Hi Cari,
I live in Montreal and my own STEWART connection is in eastern Ontario. =
I know my GGrandfather George R. STEWART was married to a Melissa =
Serviss in Iroquois, ON in the 1870's. Close, but I don't think it's =
the same branch. Besides, George is reputed to have immigrated from =
Inverness, Scotland. Unfortunatly, I haven't been able to research this =
very far as yet.
As to your question about probate records, have you checked the National =
Archives of Canada website? http://www.archives.ca/index.html
There is a lot of information available there about where to find =
various records. The following text was copied from it.=20
Quebec
"In Quebec, wills are usually authorized by notaries, who are required =
by law to retain them. On the retirement or death of the notary, or at =
the latest, fifty years after his death, his records (or greffe) are =
transferred to the Court House of the Judicial District in which he had =
his practice. Holograph wills are also deposited in the Court House. A =
copy of a will may be obtained from the Judicial Archives of the =
district, from the notary who drew it up, or from his successor. "
As your ancestors were english speaking, their probate records would =
have been in english. If, however, you do get stuck and need some =
french translation, I would be happy to help out.
Good hunting,
Tim Hewlings
