Hello Patti,

Singletary, Richard, SC 17--: E161

You may have found this article in the Stewart Clan magazine, since it
doesn't really give you your answer, but it does elaborate a little on the
family of Sarah Stewart. The article is headed Thomas Stewart of Charles
Town, and as it is short, here it is:

Thomas Stewart of Berkeley county, SC, joiner, bought 30 March 1709 of Sarah
Rhett, administratirix with the will annexed of the personal estate of
Jonathan Amory, for 30 pounds, lot no. 218 in Charles town, containing half
an acre. The witnesses to the deed were Isaac Porcher, George Barnett and
Thomas Roe [deeds Q:11 -- the books of deeds recorded prior to 1719 are in
the archives at Columbia. The oldest index book at Charleston covers 1719
to 1764. The deed we quote was recorded 30 June 1736, although made in
1709.] Charles Town is now Charleston. It was in Berkeely county until
1798, when that county was broken up, and it is now in Charleston county.
Thomas's wife was Ann--. He had a brother Robert, it appears, AND A SISTER
SARAH WHO MARRIED RICHARD SINGLETARY and was the mother of Joseph
Singletary, who was born in 1721 or 1722. He (Thomas) was a carpenter and
seems to have built some shops on his half-acre lot and to have prospered.
He died about 1723 and Ann died about 1726. Thomas's will was signed on 17
Mar 1722/23, in the presence of Joseph Barry, John Smith and Samuel
Crawford, and was probated 29 Mar 1723. He appointed "my brother Richard
Singletary and my wife" executors, and named his wife Ann and children Mary
Ann, Thomas, Susanna and William. The widow Ann of Charles Town signed her
will on 9 Sep 1725, in the presence of Thomas Sharp, Thomas Weatherly and
John Davis, and it was probated 18 Feb 1725/26. She named as executors "my
brother Robert Stewart and also my brother Thomas Weaverly and Richard
Singletary." Her daughter Mary Ann was to be given the "upper house" when
she was 21, and the rest of her houses, money, goods etc. was to be divided
among "my three children, namely Mary Ann, Thomas and Susanna." Children:
Mary Ann, b. ca 1710, m. Arthur Nash
Thomas, m. Susanna Monrow
Susanna, m. Thomas Heatley
William, not mentioned in his mother's will of 1725

Robert Stewart, who was called "my brother" in the will of Ann Stewart,
widow of Thomas, in 1725, is not identified. The register of St. Philip's
parish in Charles Town, published by A.S. Salley Jr. in 1904, has this
entry: 15 Sep 1739: "Then was buried Robert Stewart."

That's all there is; nothing was ever found to indicate to the parents were
of Sarah, Thomas and Richard, unfortunately. If as you suspect they came
from Massachusetts, that might be why, but at least in the SCM the trail is
lost. There were, however, a number of references to Haverhill, as one of
the important gateway ancestors was a John Stewart of Haverhill, first
mentioned in records in 1731, a bit late for you, but he was supposed to
have had a brother Thomas ***'who went south'*** (emphasis mine), and I
notice that the name Susanna comes in here again, John married Susanna
Mitchell, b. 1701, and the name continues down among his descendants.

Haverhill, MA : A37,41,44,45,49,53,57,60,85,92,102,103,153,175,176,214,D282

These references are mainly for John and his descendants, contributed by
George W. Stewart of Lowell. Tome A was published in 1923.

On A153 another line is mentioned with links to Haverhill, descendants of
the Stewarts of Blandford MA. It is late for your purposes, but the point
of all this does seem to be that there definitely were Stewarts in
Haverhill, so it might be well worth doing as much searching up there as you
can just in case. The distance between MA and SC should not discourage you
(after all, Richard Singletary made the trip); a lot of the early MA
settlers made it down south.

I hope this helps somehow.

Regards,
Mary
