Hello Donald,

I don't know whether this information will simply muddy your waters or what,
but there is one reference in the Stewart Clan Magazine to Fannin Co., TX,
on E229. It is earlier than your two girls, but perhaps it will give you
something to work on, since it is reference to two Stewarts going there. I'm
going to type out the whole reference, since it is ishort, nteresting, and
also shows some of the type of work that the editor, George Edson, managed
to do. This comes from the April 1948 issue.

"Hugh Stewart and his wife Elizabeth--, living on Indian creek in Jackson
county, TN reported 30 Jan 1819 that he had taken up a red and white steer,
and it was recorded in the county clerk's ranger book, 1817-1860. Jackson
county was created in 1801 from Smith county, and from it were taken Overton
county in 1806, part of DeKalb county in 1835, part of Putnam in 1842 and
part of Clay in 1870. The minutes of Cumberland Presbyterian church at
Granville, Jackson county, 1811-1935, listed Hugh and Jane Stewart among the
professors of faith living on Martin's and Indian creeks who asked 21 Feb
1818 to have a church organization. Reece Stewart was made a ruling elder
of the church 3 Nov 1841.

"The Jackson county court house at Gainesboro was burned in 1872, and only
some records in a vault in the office of the clerk and master in chancery,
dating from 1842, were saved. Mr Sadler, the present clerk and master in
chancery, kindly took the editor of the Stewart Clan Magazine down the
narrow, winding stairway to the underground vault where he keeps his
precious documents, and brought out the S file. Fortunately, it contained
the papers in a lawsuit over Hugh Stewart's personal estate in 1852. Hugh
died Feb. 1849, leaving a widow Elizabeth and children Reece C., Peggy Ann
Apple, John Stewart and Jane Lee. Reece C. was made administrator at the
March court, 1849, with Henry W. Sadler and Samuel K. McDonald as his
bondsmen. He made a settlement of the estate on the first Monday in
September 1851, and 'in a few days thereafter removed to Texas.'

Ridley Apple and his wife Peggy Ann believed that Reece had taken a wagon
and some cattle belonging to the estate and had kept some money he collected
and had left some debts unpaid, and they brought suit against him and his
bondsmen 15 Jan 1852. Reece C., who was then living in FANNIN COUNTY, TEXAS
contended that his father had given him the wagon and cattle and that all
the money he kept was his. Mentioned also as one of the heirs of Hugh
Stewart was Jane Williamson, a minor, living in Louisiana. Hugh's surviving
childen were:
Reece C, b. ca 1815, removed in 1851 to Fannin county, TX, near Denison
Peggy Ann, m. Ridley Apple
John, removed to FANNIN COUNTY, TEXAS prior to 1852
Jane, m. John Lee"

That's all there is on this family; no other mention elsewhere of any of
them. I hope it proves useful.

Regards,
Mary
