Hi Shelli,
Unfortunately the Stewart Clan Magazine is defunct; it was put out between
1922 and 1970, and the editor died shortly after the last issue in December
of that year. It never had a very large circulation, just Stewarts, but for
us it is invaluable. Even if your family isn't in it, the historical
background is fascinating.
I think probably this mailing list is the inheritor; I suspect a lot of
people who have subscribed to it have found continuations on many of the
lines in the Magazine. For one thing the editor used 1850 as his cut-off
date, which no doubt made sense to him at the time, since he was born around
1884, but in 1998 that's pretty ancient.
Yes, most of the listings were submitted by subscribers, reinforced by the
editor's research in courthouses and libraries up and down the east coast.
There were several printed genealogies as well, but mostly in New England.
He also published a lot of background information about Scotland and
Northern Ireland that he got from various books.
Unfortunately, the name Symington doesn't appear at all, neither as a first
or middle name, nor as a surname of a spouse. There is a brief reference to
Senator Stuart Symington on I88 (issue of Dec 1964, p.88) who was apparently
descended from Robert St.John Steuart and his wife Sidney Stayton, but no
other facts and no dates are given.
If you want to have a look at the Stewart Clan Magazine, a list of the
libraries where complete runs are located can be found on Benson Wills'
website: http://users.vnet.net/btw/stew.htm
He is our mailing list owner.
Regards,
Mary
