Hi Sue,

Mary Queen of Scots had one son, James I of England. Down around Charles II
it gets complicated -- there were a number of illegitimate children.
Without being particularly positive I believe that they have all been traced
and there are a few people living today in Europe that claim to be
descendants of this line, with varying degrees of success. (The main royal
line died out with Henry, who became a cardinal in Rome and is buried
there.) But none of the people who ended up in the States are connected to
them, as far as I know. I know I'm hedging; it's a tricky subject. As I am
a Mary Stewart myself I've tried to keep track (like all the rest, I grew up
convinced she was my great-grandmother or something equally mythical!) but
for practical purposes I think it's safe to say that she had no useful
descendants. Perhaps that's not the right word, but I mean descendants that
we Stewarts in the US could latch onto.

I may get into trouble with this! Leo van der Pas, for one, is an expert on
the medieval lines, and has sent me some information about people living in
South Africa who are apparently connected somehow. But most of the Stewarts
who go back to the first names on the tree, from the High Stewards of
Scotland, branched off before Mary.

Regards,
Mary
