Hi,
For those that don't know, Mary's maiden name was Mary STEWART. She
didn't become Mary STUART until she married Henry STUART, Lord Darnley. They
were half 1st cousin since they had the same grandmother, Margaret TUDOR,
who was first married to James IV, King of Scots (Mary's grandfather), and
second to Archibald DOUGLAS, Earl of Angus (Henry's grandfather). If I'm not
mistaken, Henry STUART's father, Matthew STEWART (4th Earl of Lennox), spent
some time in France and thus adopted the French spelling of the name,
STUART. Both Mary and Henry's STEWART lines descend from Alexander, 4th High
Steward (c1197-1283), and Jean MACROREY.
I descend from Matthew STUART's great-grandfather, Sir John STEWART, 1st
Earl of Lennox (b. c1433), and his wife, Margaret MONTGOMERY. They are my
first common ancestors with Henry STUART, Lord Darnley. My first common
ancestors with Mary is Robert II, King of Scots (1315-1390), and his wife,
Elizabeth MURE of Rowallan.
Now before someone writes asking me about American STEWART lines I
should tell you that I know nothing about them. I have at least 9 STEWART
lines of descent from Alan, 2nd High Steward (d. aft. 1204), in Scotland
before 1500. Mary Stewart Kyritsis' suggested, "Your best bet anyhow is to
work slowly backwards as far as you can go." Which is good advice.
