The original name was derived from the job title, The High Steward of
Scotland. From the beginning it was spelled with a t instead of a d.
The Stuart spelling (and also Steuart) resulted in the movement back
and forth from France. The French language had no W so it was
spelled "Stuart". You will find both spellings in Scotland. In the
US my family change its name at least twice between Stuart and
Stewart.
