Anyone who does not understand the price tag of "free sites" should read the
AUP, especially the following:
"User-Provided Content
".... By submitting Submitted Content to RootsWeb.com, you grant
MyFamily.com, Inc., the corporate host of the Service, a limited license to
the Submitted Content to use, host, and distribute that Submitted Content
and allow hosting and distribution on co-branded Services of that Submitted
Content."
Ancestry.com and the FTM just happen to be "co-branded Services".
The entire AUP is located at:
http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/aup.html
This is the clause they can use to harvest any data we contribute and use it
as they see fit by posting in on Ancestry.com.
I simply can not ask contributors to work for the benefit of a commercial
enterprise. I have no objection to Ancestry.com but I pay to use it. The
USGenWeb should not work to increase the data that others are in turn
charged to get. We should be true to our original goal of Free Genealogy
and I certainly think there are a number who would be willing to provide
free server space without additional ads or license to redistribute what we
do for free.
I would imagine at this point that the noise over banners does not bother
TGN nearly as much as the possibility that all contributions will dry up
and volunteers will disappear if asked to agree to the AUP. For this
volunteer the price of a "free account" is much too high! I have already
moved and offered free accounts to anyone who needs one.
