Hi Dorothy,
Don't know if this is of any help, but in my Coetsee tree I have a Sophia Maria ODENDAAL m Frederick George GOCH in abt 1846.
Sophia (who has a brother, Frederick) is d.o. Wilhelm Card ODENDAAL and Sophia Maria PETERSON who m in Swellendam in abt 1825.
Frederick George GOCH is s.o. Johan George GOCH and Dorothea Elizabeth ZWARTS who m abt 1825.

Most of this came from WorldConnect, which means that dates are not always right and names are sometimes jiggled around, but for the most part I have found this particular tree pretty accurate. Did your gr grandmother have a sister Isabella Maria Christina GOCH, b 1847, who married Gideon Petrus OPPERMAN? The Opperman side goes quite far back...

Don't know if you're familiar with NAAIRS, but I spotted quite a few death notices and liquidation accounts which would be of relevance to you if you have not already looked them up. Perhaps your Odendaal and Peterson were not actually married, which is why the 'aka' bit...

Or have they got the names mixed up?
Sharon

I have been reading with interest the conversation re Appolonia and wonder if you, who seem to know so much of slaves, could perhaps point me in the direction of at least understanding my slave ancestors.

my gr. grandmother was Sophia Cornelia Francina GOCH v.d. KAAP, born Swellendam 1837,
d.o. Sophia Rosina PIETERSE v.d. Kaap a.k.a ODENDAAL (Pieterse being her mothers name and Odendaal her father?) and Frederick George v.d. Kaap GOCH married Swellendam 1836
Soophia's grandmother was Dorothea Magdalena van de KAAP and her grandfather George Frederick GOCH.
According to Heese and Lombaard these two were "beide vry gestelde lyfeienes" . I would love to know where the name GOCH would have come from
Or where do I begin to, if possible, unravel this part of my family.

Dorothy
