Hi all
this is not such an uncommon name. The name Apollonia is an obvious
derivation from Apollo ( i.a. the Greek patron god of the arts) and it means
"of Apollo". There was an city/area in Crete called Apollonia (near
Knossus, if I remember correctly) . There was also an Apollonia in the
province Phrygia in what today is called Turkey. In Florence there is a
Benedictine convent called Santa Apollonia. At the dawn of the Christian era
there apparently was a town called Apollonia in the western area of what
today is Albania, where it is said Caesar Augustus once studied. So the
European links are definitely there
The Roman catholic church also celebrates a St Apollonia's day - 9th
February. Named after Apollonia, who died a martyr's death in the 3rd
centuryAD.
But back to things closer to genealogy: According to the book 'Personalia
of the Germans at the Cape", a number of Apollonias appear in the
German-related families:
Apollonia Sophia GEYER
Apollonia FUCHS
Apollonia Cornelia MOCKE.
Barbara Apollonia KLEINVELD
Johanna Apollonia KUYLETS
Johanna Apollonia ALJË,
Apollonia Jansz of the C., d/o of Rebekka of Bengal
Sara Elisabeth DE KAT, d/o Cornelis DE KAT of Haarlem and Apollonia of the C
.
Apollonia Africana BERGH,
Anna Elisabeth Apollonia SCHILDMEYER
Herman STOCKFLETH had an illeg. daughter, Christina, by Apollonia
ESTERHUYSEN
Apollonia Wilhelmina BROODRYK, d/o Johann Christoffel BROODRYK
Regards
Colin
