Hello again, Pat
Maj Gen Richard Bourke (not Bourse - I looked him up in Theal and the
D.S.A.B.!) was appointed as Lieut.Governor of the Eastern Cape in
1825, arriving here in March 1826. He also acted as Governor of the
Cape Colony from the same date, until the arrival of Sir Lowry Cole in
Sep 1828. In 1831 he was appointed Governor of New South Wales
and was made a K.C.B. in 1835 and was promoted to Lieut Gen. in
1837. Apart from his military experience as an infantryman, he had a
law degree from Oxford, so it is not surprising that he was valued as an
administrator.
I have a file on the Goodison family; Benjamin Croft Goodison was
baptised at St Luke's, Chelsea (London: I.G.I.) on 7 Oct 1799. He was
the son of Benjamin and Belinda Sarah Goodison. He married
Eleanor Maria Horne and died in about 1838, probably in Cape Town,
leaving two sons and a daughter.
with best wishes
William
