Hello friends…

brought to you through the combined sponsorship of three branches of the
GSSA – North West, Vaal Triangle and West Gauteng. And you are cordially
invited to attend this exciting event:

Date: Saturday 16 October 2004
Time: 14h00 to 16h00
Venue: LDS Church, Paul Kruger Avenue, Krugersdorp
Entrance and refreshments: Members of North West, Vaal Triangle and West
Gauteng branches FREE, all other guests R10 each

Topic: GISA and the SAG Series
SA Genealogies is probably the primary source of reference to many of us
involved in family research. This presentation will give you an
understanding of how the work is researched and published; it will provide
the opportunity for the exchange of opinions; and is likely to motivate
those people who have not yet joined the band of subscribers to now do so.

In his presentation our speaker will cover such points as:
* Background – The establishment of SAG, the concept and the
people behind it, how the initial work was done
* Information – Research by own staff, freelance researchers
and volunteers, reliance on other published research
* Volumes – How long it took to publish Volumes 1 to 5, when
Volumes 6 to 10 appeared, and what the timetable is for Schn to Z
* Technology – How data was maintained for the early Volumes,
how it is done today
* Funding – Who has financed the project, the extent that
Volume sales cover expenses
* New information – Whether already published data is still
being researched, who it’s done by, how it’s maintained
* The road ahead – Reissue of previously published Volumes,
publishing addenda, use of new technology such as publishing on CDs or a
website, recognising new markets as needs shift from Euro centric research.

Speaker: Leon Endemann, Executive director of GISA
Leon was born in Krugersdorp and matriculated at Pietersburg Hoërskool. He
went on to obtain his BA Hons in history at Potchefstroom University. After
a short spell at teaching, he joined the Department of Home Affairs in
Pretoria and during his ten years there he served as Second Secretary at the
South African Legation in Stockholm, then as Consul and second in charge at
the SA Consulate in Lima. Thereafter Leon moved to the National Archives in
the Union Buildings in Pretoria. Experience that stood him in good stead in
his subsequent careers as researcher and senior researcher at the Institute
of History Research of the Human Sciences Research Council (1974-1980) and
in the Sound Archives at the SABC (1984-1995). At his request, Leon retired
to the Eastern Cape in April 1995. But his retirement was relatively
short-lived when he was appointed in March 1998 as the first director of the
newly established Genealogical Institute of South Africa in Stellenbosch. In
September 1999 SAG Volume 5 was published and since then Volumes 6 to 10.
Right now, Leon and his team are hard at work to have Volume 11 (Scho-Sny)
make its appearance.

Please join us to benefit from this valuable presentation.

Kind regards…
