I believe the Buffalos are of American origin (though in that case it is
not clear how they would have acquired the word "Royal", or, if it was
before the Revolution, why they would have kept it), while the
Oddfellows (of various kinds) hail mainly from the North of England,
e.g. Manchester Unity. The United States has a vast number of such odd
societies, including the Elks. When I was in new Orleans in 1991 my
wife and I sat down in a cheap-and-cheerful cafe -- bare laminex tables,
wonderful gumbo soup, you get the picture -- for a meal, only to fins
the place being invaded by a large group of jovial men in funny hats
and bright-coloured clothes who turned out to be in town for a
convention of one of these bodies. They were entirely harmless and made
the meal all the more enjoyable!
