For what it's worth my grandfather went from Natal to Barberton via Delagoa
Bay. So did a cousin of his. They certainly went for the Barberton gold that
way. So maybe these guys jumped off in Durban and took (probably a slow
boat) to Delagoa bay then trekked inland to Barberton.
My boys did have 'passports' of a sort to give them entry to the
Mozambique.
