When I started work as a bus conductor in Johannesburg in 1961, the rate of
pay was 59c per hour, or R25.96 a week. When I left in 1963 it had gone up to
61c per hour, or R26.84 a week.
A cup of coffee in a cafe in town was 5c, an omelet and chips was 35c.
