Hi Lynda
can see you are new to this List and promise there is so much kindness and
help out there - most of all when people ask simple questions and unfailing
care and concern for all. Early questions also remind all of our early
days.
I've been a member, on and off, for 4yrs, repeatedly seeking clues for one
person. Even when none can help, there have been suggestions of what to do
next and kind offers .... sympathy too when all fails!
It is a good idea to keep looking at the archives of any List .... I have
sometimes forgotten if searching a new line ... but, as above, even oldies
forget!
How much I appreciated, and still appreciate, all advice and potential leads
.... and, especially kind reminders for where else I may search.
.. Except on one List, where I got a DIY response - from one person ... and
help from lots of others.
Don't despair. As your search grows you will find people so kind as to look
up info which you didn't request, sometimes just because they are interested
and want to help. At first you will certainly find some "simple" routes to
basic research where people give you website contact points.
NB on my very first attempt to research Family History I didn't even find
Rootsweb, let alone other options. It was a year before I traced the link
and joined the Lists. I still regard myself as very naive when searching a
new line or joining a new List - especially since the one negative response
received on one particular List.
It is impossible to return help to all those who give you help for a
specific enquiry. Sometimes it is possible to help others elsewhere.
I have tried, as best I can, to search info in my own locality as a sort of
"payback" for help from distant shores and places. There may be a time for
you to be able to do that too in some way
Please don't feel negative. Sometimes it isn't easy to understand how
important early research and support can be in promoting future interest -
especially how it may encourage others to learn and pass on their own
knowledge.
Regards
Gilly
