I was most disappointed to read Maureen's comments and felt that new
people to the list could be intimidated in asking any questions in case
the questions had been asked before.
Having just joined the list this year, I would like to thank all the
people who have willingly helped me in my research so far. I took
Maureen's advice today BUT when I got to the site, she stated there were
EIGHT years to search from. I could only search one year at a time for
each of my queries (is there a better/easier way of searching this other
than browsing?) If I had time Maureen, I would follow your advice but I
do not have hours of free time to peruse this site in the hope of
finding the answer to my queries.
I know that there might be someone on the list who willingly would be
able to help me in my journey of finding my roots, as others have helped
them along the way. Although new to the list, I have also been able to
help others in their research and this has given me great joy and has
been very rewarding.
I am probably expressing the thoughts of many newcomers. I hope that our
questions to the list may continue without feeling intimidated and
fearful that we have done the wrong thing by asking the question.
Researching in a country that you do not live in, is not the easiest way
to do it. If you had been researching for family in Australia Maureen,
I'm sure you would be asking the same questions that we would find easy
to answer as we have the resources here in our FHS centres. In my FHS
centre we have no fysche readily available for South Africa at all to
look at whereas in your centres you probably have heaps. We certainly do
have all the fysche here in Australia for Australian research, which is
freely available.
Now I have had my say and feel better that I didn't just delete the
posting!
Once again, a very BIG thank you to all the wonderful people on the list
who are assisting me in finding the elusive Hyams and I'm most grateful
to everyone who has shared/exchange research with me regarding GARBUTT,
ADENDORFF, EDMONSTONE and TATHAM.
Kinds regards and take care
Marilyn from Glenhaven in Australia

ships and Ackermanns
Temper, temper, Maureen. I'm very lucky, my machine's got a DELETE
button.
Yes, the same topics to do come up regularly - but that means that more
and more people are becoming interested. And yes, the same
surnames do come up - I have been working on my BOT(H)MAs since the
early 1980s and just last week someone had something new for me.
And there are all the happy messages between people who find links
across the centuries and across the continents.
I am sure if I suddenly came across a lead in say Australia or Canada
I'd jump in and ask all sorts of naïve questions that
'everyone' on the relevant Lists knows, but hopefully some kind soul
would point me in the right direction.
Rather use your considerable skills and do us a nice article on 'How to
Get What You Want Out of the List Archive Without Running
Up a Huge Phone Bill'. I get very frustrated trying to find messages I
know are hiding in there.
Have a happy weekend
Eileen
