Hi Nolene

Since publishing my Lists of German Settlers on Heather's site I have
received requests for further information on the basis of one or two a
week - after the rather overwhelming initial flurry of requests. I took
the alternative route, and I'm suggesting that you might do the same, of
only providing the names and then offering to look up the specific
details if required. This saved me hours of typing. It also gives me a
sense of worth to get these regular requests and know that my Lists are
helpful to so many people. It would be a pity if you decided not to
offer at least the names.

Whatever you decide, thank you for your sustained and valuable
contribution to South African genealogy.

Subject: [ZA] GERMAN MILITARY IMMIGRANTS OF 1857/58 - Example of
information

Hi

The task of putting together the complete database is proving extremely
difficult due to the handwriting on the original documents as well as
the
fact that a lot of the men were recorded in the army records (paylists,
enlistment papers etc) under only one of their first names (some of them
had
up to four first names). In other instances different first names are
used
on different records and the only way that I can confirm that they are
the
same chap is by tracking the "regiment number" for the man.
Unfortunately
some of the original regiment numbers were changed when the original
regiments were consolidated into only 3 regiments in SA. The spellings
of
the surnames also varied widely! Anyway, to give you some idea of the
information that will be available herewith an example:

On original list of military settlers: YES
Rank: Private
Original regiment: 2nd Jagers (rifles)
Original Regiment number: 641
New regiment in SA: 3rd Reg
New Regiment Number: 518
PRO Ref for enlistment papers: WO/15/097/2750
Pay lists recorded on:
1856/10/21-11/14 (the last date here is the date of embarkation in the
UK)
1859/7/1-9/30
(I have only done 2 so far - I have copies of all paylists from 1856 -
1861)
Surname: LEHMKUHL
First name: Christian
Age at time of enlistment: 26
Occupation at time of enlistment: Knecht
Origin given on enlistment papers: Selmsdorf
Place originally settled in SA: Stutterheim
Sources:
PRO Kew

The response regarding my request for details of the first generation of
these men's descendants has not been very high. In fact I have only had
5
responses from the group so I have to wonder if there is in fact any
purpose
in completing this project. If there are so few descendants around I
could
in fact be wasting my time! If you have information that could assist
and
have not sent it to me yet, please let me have it as soon as possible so
I
can make an educated decision on whether to complete this project or
not.

Kind regards
Nolene
