My guess would be that mkulu means "lots of", "much" or "great/big"
(waters), having lived in the Shona half of Zimbabwe for many years.
Amanzi, or variations thereof, is common for water in many African
languages.

Not a problem, I'm used to it being. I spoke to my husband and he seems
to think that it probably was an anglizized (sp) of the word 'cool' . To
be cold in Ndebele is uyaqanda, the q has a click. Hope this helps,
