Nothing hiccuppy about this name, it is an old VOC-connected name, and
the source of the place-name Oudtshoorn in South Africa. I have always
supposed that it originated from the fact that "van" surnames could
indicate either a patronymic or a place of origin, and if there were
more than one of the former they could be distinguished by the latter.
There is no doubt a place called Oudtshoorn in the Netherlands, though
it is not in my atlas.
