<<BADEN-POWELL was the founder of the Scouting movement
in South Africa. I have been given these informative pamphlets
that pertain to early settlers in South Africa by a member of the
Scouting movement in the Port Elizabeth district.
Brownies, Cubs, Girl Guides and Scouts all work for badges
and one of their projects was to identify early pioneers who
disembarked on the shores of South Africa. Some of the surnames
are even lucky to have a Family Crest, thanks to the imagination
and creative flair of the child concerned. Sadly, there
are no names to identify the researcher. >>
a. Thomas PHILIPPS (1776 - 1859) was the leader of the PHILIPPS party
of 25 persons from Pembrokeshire, Wales on the Kennersley Castle with
his wife, Charlotte Harriet née ARBOIN 41, of Highbury Place, Middlesex
and seven children.

Unmarried.
PHILIPPS' Party were located at "Lampeter", seven miles north of
Bathurst, but after a few years of bitter struggle, the party had
disintegrated. The PHILIPPS' moved to "Glendower" on the coast near
Kasouga River where they farmed with considerable success.
Settler Thomas PHILLIPS, who was in a affluent circumstances, was a
qualified barrister of Grey's Inn, but had become a banker and Whig
politician in Pembrokeshire. Because of this background he was one of
the leading citizens on the frontier, was a Special Heemraad and a
J.P., also on the Committee for the Relief of Distressed Settlers,
Chairman of the Cultural Society and submitted evidence on behalf of
Settlers to the Commission of Enquiry in 1823. He was the leader of
the protests against Lord Charles SOMERSET's autocratic measure. he was
a Freemason and a foundation member and first Master of the Albany
Lodge.
Mrs. PHILIPPS died in 1834. In the Sixth Frontier War, "Glendower" was
burnt and most of the stock taken. In 1835 PHILIPPS presented a
petition to the English Parliament on the administration of the
Eastern Province.
On his return in 1837, he handed over "Glendower" to his sons and
settled in Grahamstown, as active as ever in public affairs.
When the Voortrekker leader Jacobus UYS camped with his party at
Grahamstown, PHILIPPS was delegated to present a Bible and an address
of sympathy to the emigrant Boers. This address was read for him by
one of the citizens in English and by another in Dutch, after which
Thomas PHILIPPS himself handed over the Bible. A panel depicting this
final scene appears in the Voortrekker Monument, Pretoria and also on
the Bible Monument recently erected on the actual site at Grahamstown.
Thomas PHILIPPS was the author of 'Scenes and Occurrences in Albany and
Cafferland' and 'Advantages of Emigration to Algoa Bay and Albany'/
His letters to relatives in Wales edited by Prof. A. KEPPEL-JONES are
published under the title 'Philipps, 1820 Settler'.
PHILIPPS was the Chairman and the driving force behind the local
Immigration Society. He was a staunch supporter for the separation of
the Eastern Province from the Western Province. When he died on 1 Sep
1859, the Grahamstown Journal said that "he was engaged in every
undertaking for the benefit of the country of his adoption".
Best wishes
