Hi Listers,
Seems to me, that one can never guess a name... given the response on
variations of the same theme... good luck at finding Guested! and all the
varieties...

Hi, Leslie,
Ludwig is a German name, so the first thing to do is consider that it
might be spelt G umlaut-U S T E D. I looked this up in my admirably
detailed Times Atlas of the World, and no luck. But there is a place
called GÜSTEN near Marburg in Germany. Any possibility you have got the
name slightly wrong?
I don't know what Google's practice is in regard to accidentals like the
umlaut and accents and the crossed O etc., but if it ignores them it
might also not recognize that UE could be written Ü. (And of course
that would apply only in German -- in French the same sign is used as a
diaeresis, that is, to indicate the separation of a pair of vowels into
two separate sounds, as in Citroën, which would sound different without
the diaeresis. Afrikaans does the same thing, as is hoër. An indixing
system that could discriminate according to language would be very
difficult to construct.)
So one must always consider the possibilities, besides the notorious
inability of people in the past as wella s the present to hold a
foreign spelling in their minds long enough to get it right next time.
