Hi Keith
I'm sure your ancestors behaviour is not unique. What interests me is -
what if I have a MEINTJES (or any other Name really I suppose) in my parish?
Do I pretend they are all from a completely isolated and separate wing of
the family or do I make the connection. That is badly put. What I mean is
when people on this list ask about TROLLIPs (a name I 've seen alot
recently) do I given them dear old Mrs TROLLIP's address or is this going to
hurt both Mrs TROLLIP and the inquirer who doesn't want to know about her
great grandfather's indiscretions?
One family in my parish is Ruth Hendricks. Her maiden name was OHLSON and
her grandfather OHLSON was a German farmer. On her mother's side she has a
picture of a Mr JONES who was the coachman to the Earl of Stamford who lived
in Wynberg. Mr Jones married one of the miads of the STAMFORDS. Ruth has
a picture of Mr JONES and he is most certainly a white amn and this is no
problem to Ruth (or me). On the other hand when I suggested to someone
whose relatives use to live in 2nd Avenue Retreat (today a "coloured" area)
that they might be of "mixed blood" this lady became very irate! That is
what I'm trying to avoid. In fact I'm trying to avoid all this racial talk
but trying to realistic as well!
Derek
