Gary,
There are these Estate papers in the Cape Town Archives. His death notice and
/ or will should have the names of his children.
MOOC 6/9/12821 1841/46 GERBER, FERDINAND. ESTATE PAPERS. 1946 1946
There are also references to Johannes Ferdinand Gerber, who may be his son.
I seem to recall that GISA in Stellenbosch had family crests on their
website.
Best wishes,
Keith

My goodness - this is becoming addictive!
In a book titled "The Big South African Family Name Book" (An Afrikaans
book) I have ascertained that there were 2 'stamvaders' for the Gerber
family in South Africa. One is from France and the other from Germany. I
am interested in researching the German one. The details are as follows:
Stamvader: Ferdinand Gerber from Gersfeld in Hesse-Nassau in Germany.
Date of Birth: 3 November 1870
Arrived in South Africa in 1889
Married Hedi Hammerschlag on 29 January 1901
They had two children
I am needing to find out the names of the children they had. How would I
go about that?
Also - where would I find a passenger list which might tell me a bit
more about how and where he arrived from and also how do I start
researching the tree from Germany's side. At the present time my main
concern is ascertaining the names of his children. I am researching back
from myself but would also like to research from his side as well - as
having only arrived here in 1889 - the tree should not be very long on
this side.
I am also trying to find an authentic crest of the German Gerber's.
Where could I find this.
I know that many on this list are far more experienced than I but am
offering to provide any info I may have in this book for your name as
well. There are explanations of the surnames/ Stamvaders as well as
marriages and deaths. Also features a large collection of color family
crests which I would be prepared to scan and email to you.
Regards
