Hello Gary
I would suggest you obtain a copy of his estate papers from the Cape Town
Archives: www.national.archives.gov.za
DEPOT KAB
SOURCE MOOC
TYPE LEER
VOLUME_NO 6/9/12821
SYSTEM 01
REFERENCE 1841/46
PART 1
DESCRIPTION GERBER, FERDINAND. ESTATE PAPERS.
STARTING 19460000
ENDING 19460000
(there are 18 documents in these archives pertaining to this man)
from here this should give you details of his parents and place of birth,
age as well as any children. If his wife predeceased him it should give
dates of when she died as well.
Passenger lists are very few and far between - best bet is the National
Library in Cape Town where the daily passengers lists were published in
local newspapers, generally only 1st and 2nd Class.
With regards to an authentic Gerber Coat of Arms , unless you can prove you
are of that exact same family line you are not entitled to use it at all.
You would have to have your own crest or coat of arms drawn up and then
submitted to the Bureau of Heraldry where it will have to be registered -
this will set you back a couple of thousand rands.
good luck
kind regards
Heather
