Subject: [ZA] Re Albania settlers; STEPHEN family

Hi Sarah, Deborah & others
I have only just learnt about the name Albania settlers. I am interested
because my great grandfather, JAMES OSCAR STEPHEN, born 1853, when he grew
up, lived in Albany first (married 1876), then Bedford (maybe that is still
in Albany) then
Hanover, then Hopetown, then Kimberley and finally Vierfontein in OFS. They
were living there when the Anglo-Boer War started. The reason for the move
to Hanover was because of his health. They moved every
time as a family and most of the time were farming, although he did have a
store as well in Vierfontein. Many people who moved to Hopetown, did so
because of the discovery of diamonds. I'm not sure why farmers kept moving.
Maybe they were inexperienced and kept trying different types of farming in
different places. This seems to have been the case with my great
grandfather. His father DOUGLAS STEPHEN came out to S.A. in about 1844 so
wasn't an 1820 Settler.
Does anyone else have any information about the Stephen family? Helen, I
would be very interested to know the titles and authors of the books about
Albania Settlers.
Regards
Marion
