Hi Shelley

I can confirm that Lachenalia peersii, was named after a Mr
V.S. Peers, who was a collector of Cape plants, mainly bulbs
and succulents. The plant was named after him by the
renowned botanist Rudolf Marloth, who was very active in the
late 1800s and early 1900s. But the name was only formally
published many years later.

I can also confirm that Peers Cave, was excavated by Victor
and Bertram Peers in 1927. They found numerous human
artefacts including a skull (dated at 15000 years) which was
named Fish Hoek Man. The site was re-named as Peers Cave and
declared a national monument. It is a great place to visit
when walking on Table Mountain.

A book giving short biographies of many early South African
plant collectors was published some years back and this may
have an entry for V.S. Peers. I will see if I can locate a
copy to check for you.

Best wishes
Craig Hilton-Taylor
