Hello Becky,
The following info is taken from newspaper accounts of the incident that
appear in what appears to be a privately published book entitled The Red
Book. Natal Press Reports. Anglo-Zulu War 1879 compiled by Ron Lock and
Peter Quantrill.
Lieutenant Carey, who accompanied the Prince Imperial, was summoned to
appear at a court martial on an indictment of "having misbehaved before the
enemy on the 1st June 1879 when in command of an escort in attendance on
the Prince who was making reconnaissances in Zululand, in having, when the
said Prince and escort were attacked by the enemy, galloped away, and in
not having attempted to rally them or otherwise defend the Prince."
According to a statement given by Lieutenant Carey, the escort consisted of
"..six Europeans of Bettington's Horse..."
Evidence given at the court martial indicates that members of the escort were:
Troopers Abel and Rogers (killed during the encounter)
Corporal Grubb, Trooper Cochrane and Sergeant Willis (called to give evidence)
1 unnamed member
If Mr. Jelly was a member of the escort, then you might be able to track
him through military records in England.
Regards,
Pat Smith
