Topic The relationship between historical and genealogical
research
Speaker Elsabé Brink
A historian with an MA from the University of the Witwatersrand and founder
of ILIFA, a company that conducts historical research in the fields of
tourism and heritage. She consulted to institutions such as the City of
Johannesburg Metropolitan Council, The Gauteng Tourism Authority, and the
South African Heritage Resource Agency (SAHRA), previously the National
Monuments Council.
Elsabé has published a number of articles, and books. These include:
E Brink, The Nunn Family: Beyond the Boundaries, in Paul Faber; compiler,
Group Portrait South Africa: Nine Family Histories, Kwela Books, KIT
Publishers, Capetown, 2003. In 2001 to commemorate the 21st anniversary of
the Soweto Uprising, with a number of colleagues, she published a book
SOWETO June 16 1976: It all started with the dog. (Kwela Books, 2001). In
1999 her book 1899: The Long March Home appeared, also with Kwela
Publishers. It relates a little-known incident which took place at the
outbreak of the Anglo Boer South African War, when more than 7 000 Zulus
workers turned their backs on the war and, within ten days, marched home
from Johannesburg to Zululand and Natal.
