Hello Barb,

My grandfather, PERCY OSBORNE, used to say that he was in the 'CP2', so before the electronic age, I wrote to the Cape Archives Depot, P.Bag X9025, CT 8000, and asked for info. They could only find his Attestation papers for the Cape Mounted Police, dated 25.2.1902, under their Ref.CMP 42, and after paying the copy fee recieved copies of these. They consist of :
OATH : for Police Force Raised under Provisions of Act No.12 of 1882. - little personal info, but hand written attachment gives physical info and next of kin (UK)
CAPE POLICE - Candidate's Paper - a questionaire with interresting questions.
AGENT'S ARTICLES of AGREEMENT (UK) - little personal info.
CONDITIONS OF SERVICE, Cape Police 1, H.Q., King Williams Town.
Medical Certificate - physical info.
I'm not sure how you can obtain access to these achives in the computer age.

I also have an article from 'The Settler' magazine of Jan/Feb 1989 about the Mounted Police in SA. Briefly :
'The largest and most important corps of mounted police SA has had was the South African Constabulary, raised in 1900 by Major-General Robert BADEN-POWELL. Recruits - all men of a very good type - were gathered in from all over the British Empire. The Constabulary originally numbered 6000, but soon had to be vastly increased owing to the general state of unrest.'
'After Union in 1910 an entirely new force known as the South African Police was founded.'

If your grandfather was serving during the Boer War, he would be entitled to medals, the Queen,s SA medal and/or King's SA medals. Fred Scott () can check his medal rolls and give you a Medal Verification, for 15 pounds, if he was entitled.

Hope this helpful.

Kind regards,

Chuck Osborne,
Durban.

Sorry everyone, I forgot to mention that my gfather was in the Capetown
Police Force sometime the years between 1890's-1905.
Anyone having any information I would appreciate immensely.
Thanks
