Hi Sharon
I am putting this reply on the list as it may interest others too.
I actually had some of the Barnes facts wrong. A relative who is also doing
family research gave me the correct info, which he got from a book called
Through the Chequered Path by Pamela Barnes. Apparently it is well
researched and very interesting. I am going to try to get hold of it. Here
follow some extracts, which will help to clarify a complicated set-up:
Page 11: ...Henry Harper, 30 a cooper, with his brother James, 14, and his
daughter Elizabeth, 6. Accompanying him were Mary Barnes, 37, and her sons
James, 12 and George, 8, while her daughter Elizabeth, 13, scheduled to
travel with them, appears to have been left behind for some reason.
Page 35: Lists of births: On the 15th April (I think in 1822) Maria, child
of Henry Harper and Mary Barnes.
When she came to the Cape in 1820 with her two sons James and George, Mary
(a widow) had for some reason been obliged to leave behind her
thirteen-year-old daughter Elizabeth. As a widow with no male over
seventeen in her family, she had no chance of being included in any
emigration scheme in her own right, so she had allied herself to the widowed
Henry Harper, who was bringing his own daughter and his brother with him to
the Cape. To permit Mary's inclusion in Howard's Party, Harper had declared
that she was his wife and they maintained this deception for eight years
before marrying in Grahamstown in 1827.
William also sent me a list of Barnes descendents from 1820. [Thanks
William. It is a bit cryptic but I'm trying to sort it out.] From that I
can give the following information:
Mary Barnes (nee Dixon) born Jan. 1782 in England and died 6 June 1863 in
Grahamstown.
George Sutton Barnes born 4 May 1811, London, died 6 Feb 1903 in
Grahamstown.
Anna Maria Dugmore born 13 April 1812 at St. Phillip's, Birmingham, died 2
Jan 1889 in Grahamstown.
Mary's first husband was definitely dead before she came to SA. I wondered
what happened to her poor 13 year old daughter?
If you need more information perhaps William or I could help you.
Best wishes,
Marion
