The only LILFORD I have ever known was a prominent tobacco farmer known affectionately in the district as Boss LILFORD in the former Southern Rhodesia during the 1970's or thereabouts. If you have an interest in him, I could possibly find a contact for you unless someone else on the list knew him.

Good afternoon fellow listers.

A relative of mine sent me the following information and asked if I could
help him expand on his knowledge:

Frank (Charles) LILFORD, born Marylebone, London 23 Dec 1826 (believed to
have been baptised in that parish), emigrated to South Africa as a young
man, obtained work with a shipping company, died East London 5 Mar 1898.

He is believed to the second cousin of Benjamin LILFORD and Blanche
Elizabeth WARD. He had an elder brother, William, who went to Australia, and
a sister Mary.

Frank Charles was married in Grahamstown to Francis Denman HOCKEY, born 22
Sep 1835 and died in 1898. They had ten children, the first being born on 26
Nov 1857 in Burgersdorp.

Lilford is the name of both a village in Northhampton, UK and the estate of
the Powys family - Barons Lilford of Lilford.

First request: Can anyone confirm and expand on this information?
Second request: Where do the LILFORD ancestors come from, in particular
those of Benjamin LILFORD? According to an unconfirmed family legend, they
were POWYs who for some reason changed their name to LILFORD
Third request: Can someone obtain copies of the following documents for me
from the Capetown Archives (in return for a suitable fee, of course)?
