Hi there
Newspaper cuttings from the Eastern Cape.
Herald 1971
Interesting old photos found
When Mrs. Maud POOLEY of Port Elizabeth was sorting through old newspapers and photographs, she came across the pictures of historical interest. One shows Cecil John RHODES with a group of men in Umzimkulu in the Transkei when he was a guest of Mrs. POOLEY's parents, Captain & Mrs. E.J. WHINDUS.
At the time Captain WHINDUS, a former soldier who had become a magistrate officiated at a meeting between RHODES and two leading farmers he wished to see as well as local attorney and civil servants. The photograph was taken in the grounds of the WHINDUS family's home in Umzimkulu. There is no date on the back of it, but presumably it was taken between 1890 and 1895 when RHODES was Prime Minister of the Cape Colony.
SMALL CHILD
Another photograph Mrs. POOLEY has, taken in that same garden is a group with Sir Walter HELY-HUTCHINSON, who was governor of Natal from 1893 to 1901 and of the Cape Colony from 1901 to 1910. Captain WHINDUS is seated next to Sir Walter. Mrs. POOLEY said she was a small child when the photograph was taken. Then there is a photograph taken after an early session of the Transkeian Territories General Council (Bunga) which was established in 1895. Among the magistrate pictured with the chiefs are Captain WHINDUS & Mrs. POOLEY's brother-in-law, Mr. Fred GILFILLAN.
TEACHER
Another photograph shows delegates to a conference of Transkeian magistrate in 1910. This was taken after Mrs. POOLEY's father had retired, but her brother-in-law, Mr. GILFILLAN, who was then at Nqamakwe, is in the group.
There is also a photograph of British officers where Lord ROBERTS and Sir Alfred MILNER, taken in 1900 during the South African War. Mrs. POOLEY, who is one of the oldest music teachers in the Eastern Cape, was born in Umtata. She took her Licentiate in Queenstown and taught at the old Queenstown Girls' High school there as well as the Queenstown Girls' High School.
She was a pioneer music teacher in Hopetown, Jansenville and after her marriage to Mr. Eugene POOLEY, who died in 1949, she taught in Kenhardt..
Best wishes
Becky
