Hi Bernie,

I have only just rejoined Conrad's List so do not know the extent of your interest in the WILKINSON family. As you mentioned, a branch settled at Houwhoek hence my interest in them- the early development of the Elgin district is one of my research projects. My information on this family is limited so am not sure if it will be of any help.

I am interested in the fact that you refer to Amelia as born SISBY. Would this be the correct version of her surname? I have only found her as SISLEY or CISLEY. She appears as SISLEY on her son Joseph Josua's D/N (MOOC 6/9/288 ref 12). The other instance of the surname comes from the baptism records of the Somerset West DR Church. It reads more or less as follows:-
Magdalena Johanna b. 16 August 1845, =11.11.1845, daughter of Joseph Josua WILKENSON (Houwhoek) and Magdalena VAN AS. The witnesses were William TURNER, Amelia CISLEY (sic), Paul Lodewyk AVENANT and Wilhelmina Sara VAN AS. Some of the surnames mentioned appear in H&L's genealogies.

I think a few descendants of William Turner WILKINSON (s/o Joseph Josua WILKINSON and Magdalena Johanna VAN AS) still live in the Elgin area. Yvonne Robertson and her intrepid team of gravehoppers recorded most of the burials in the district and kindly made them available to me.

Regards,
Lorna Newcomb
Do you have a list of the Settlers who were transferred to the Albury,
how many Settlers stayed behind in Simon's Bay,?? why I ask is because
my GGrandmother's father, Joseph Joshua WILKINSON, and his parents
were Settlers onboard the Zorester, but there is no evidence of them
settling in the Eastern Cape with the other settlers, all recordings
of them are from Caledon to Somerset West, but mostly around Hoewhoek,
where they had a General Store. The family was Stephen WILKINSON, wife
Amelia (b. SISBY), daughter Sarah and son Joseph Joshua, who was only
8months old when they embarked at Deptford, England.
Note, that in most listings of settlers, "Amelia" is recorded as
"Cornelia"
