Subject: [ZA] Mayoress of Mowbray / Capetown in 1912

When I was young we had a large ostrich feather at home and the story goes
that it came from my mothers uncle who was the mayor of Capetown. We never
substantiated the story and asked any friends visiting Capetown to find out
if any BARNARD's had been the mayor. Of course the friends never discovered
any BARNARD details in Capetown. Now I am researching my family history on
my Grandmothers side and the picture has cleared a little. I was sent a
newspaper cutting by someone else searching another BARNARD line wondering
if this was my line, it was. The Stowmarket Post October 3rd 1912 covered
the funeral of my g. grandmother Mrs MARGARET BARNARD. Amongst the mourners
were Mrs GARDINER (Mayoress of Mowbray, Capetown, Daughter).

Can anyone enlighten me further?

Would she be the mayoress of a town called Mowbray, or was she mayoress of
Capetown and lived in Mowbray?
Was she the mayoress because her husband Mr GARDINER was the mayor?
Trying to eliminate known family I believe that her name was CECELIA BRETT
born 1865 in Stratford upon Avon.
I don't know whether she married Mr GARDINER before going to Capetown or
went to Capetown and married out there.
There is another mystery for me to solve, because CECELIA was born several
years before my g. grandparents were married, but that is for me to work on
in England.

Thank you in anticipation,

Joan Taylor
