Hi Lynn,
Seeing as your BENN's are connected to Knysna I thought there must be a
connection to the boat on the Knysna Lagoon known as the John Benn. The boat
is used to ferry tourists between Knysna and the "Featherbed" Nature
Reserve. The boat sometimes sails out to the Knysna Heads, not venturing out
to sea. We did the trip in about 1992 and I still remember the joy on my
parent's faces as they had never done anything like it before. The trip to
the Heads is quite exhilarating as the waves come crashing through the
narrow gap churning the mouth of the lagoon into white water.
You can read more about the John Benn on the Featherbed Tourist website at:
http://www.featherbed.co.za/
Follow the link entitled "Luxury Lagoon Cruises".
Regards,
Gerold Whittaker,
Mosselbay.

Subject:[ZA] Burkigt, Benn - for Lynn Macloed
Hi there Lynn,
There is very little about Burkigt in SAG:
August BURKIGT x Maria LEVEN
b1 Henriëtte Emily Louisa *14.11.1862 ~Peddie 12.8.1863.
All the E-Cape genies is there anything else on Burkigt out there?
As far as the Benn family goes SAG shows a number of Benns [order of entries
changed] who are not linked to one another. I would hazard a guess and say
that John Benn *1814 and William Benn * c1817 were brothers and that
Benjamin Benn was a son of one of the brothers, and Antonet a daughter, also
that John and William married Smith sisters or cousins, but it is still just
speculation.
John BENN * 1814, cabinet maker x Swellendam 17.1.1842 Anne SMITH *1821
b1 Anne *5.5.1843 ~Swellendam 3.7.1834 x Knysna 27.2.1868 John Henry BAILIE
b2 Elizabeth Charlotte *24.8.1844 ~Swellendam 20.10.1844 +2.1.1907 x David
William BECKETT
b3 Jessie Smith x Knysna 13.8.1873 Andrew Christopher SASS
b4 Donald *12.2.1851 ~Mossel Bay 22.6.1851
William BENN * c1817, shopowner at Zuurbrak xSwellendam 24.3.1845 Mary
Frances SMITH *c1828
b1 John Adrian Bernardus *13.9.1846 ~Swellendam 29.11.1846
b2 Elizabeth Sarah ~Swellendam 27.12.1846 [check this out, she may be the
eldest just chr later than her brother, John Adrian Bernardus. He was born
13.9.1846, she was chr 27.12.1846, so she was either his twin, or stillborn
not full term, or born before him, or SAG error.]
b3 William x Susanna Jacoba GERBER
c? Gertrude Mary *14.7.1894 ~Knysna 3.9.1894
Antonet Francina BENN x Riversdal 6.11.1854 Willem SNYMAN
Benjamin BENN *c1849 x Oudtshoorn 16.3.1880 Elsie Catharina HOFFMAN *1869
b1 Henry William *1.2.1881 Oudtshoorn 3.3.1881
b2 Annie Frances Christine *16.1.1882 Õudtshoorn 30.4.1882
Wiliiam Henry BENN *Deptford, Kent, England c 1832, shopowner at
Kruisrivier, Oudtshoorn, +Oudtshoorn 20.3.1862 x Oudtshoorn 1.11.1858 Elsje
Catharina SWART *1841
b1 Henry Johan Gert *13.11.1860 ~George 27.11.1860 x Oudtshoorn 1.6.1886
Catharina Elizabeth BEKKER, widow of Jan Diederik BENEKE
b2 Wilhelmina Hendrina *18.9.1862 ~George 23.11.1862
[Don't discount the fact that William Henry may also be a son of one of the
two brothers, whose wife may have gone to England to visit and had the baby
there, again just guesswork.]
Arthur John BENN, shopowner at Knysna * 1870 x Knysna 25.2.1896 Jacomina
Geertruida VAN ROOYEN * 1876.
[Could be son of one of the b's]
The only references I could find on Benn and Burkigt were in SAG.
Hope this helps.
