Keith, Thanks for your very helpful note, and I will certainly follow it up. Being a novice in this game, what do the symbols in your citation mean, and is there a connection between the names VAN ELLEWEE and VAN ELLENCE? Incidently reverting to my earlier mention of the living DU PLESSIS's one of whom you kindly contacted in Canada, my son has now met his father, Jean Prieur DU PLESSIS, a minister in the Church of the East in Joburg! Is this name characteristic of a particular branch of the family, do you think?
And Becky, Thanks also for your great help too, and I will see what I can do about MWeb, probably not till after the holidays.
And to you both and to all you wonderful list people, a Merry Christmas and a Happy and hopefully a Prosperous New Year 2003.
Ralph.

There is an extensive listing for DU PLESSIS in the new Volume 8 of SA
Genealogies. Ralph's connection is
b4 Maria DU PLESSIS * Holland 1702 x 7.11.1718 Jan VAN ELLEWEE xx Stellenbosch
31.8.1749 Johann Georg ZORN.
(Maria is the first child of the second wife.)
Then, the VAN ELLEWEE descendants are in SA Genealogies 2.
Best wishes,
Keith

Hi Viv and Ralph
I'm not sure if this is going to help or if you have been to these
undermentioned sites, so apologies if it might be a repetition.
Have a look at this site. Interesting info on the VOC (Dutch India Company)
A Jean Prieur DU PLESSIS is mentioned.
http://www.museum.co.za/flight.htm
Also go to Heather's site www.genealogy.co.za and search for OOSTERLAND
PASSENGER LIST. There you will also find Jean Prieur DU PLESSIS.
Ralph, here is another site but
http://home.mweb.co.za/el/elijo/famhtml/dat10.htm that has a database on DU
PLESSIS. Unfortunately it is only open to users (which I am not) but I see
that you are a subscriber. Maybe you can send a letter to MWeb's suggestion
box and inquire if they would be willing to split subscriber fees pertaining
to genealogy. This server has a huge amount of genealogy data which is being
'lost' to non-subscribers, especially to our overseas researchers. Maybe
they will give you 3 months credit for your suggestion. :o)
Festive Greetings,
Becky

> Hi Viv, I too have an interest in the DU PLESSIS family. I have only very
limited information however, that one of my ancestors, JEAN DU PLESSIS
arrived in Table Bay in 1688 and married a MARIA BRUSET (BRUNET?)Then
presumambly a daughter married a JOHANNES VAN ELLENCE from Amsterdam. Then
followed in succession HENDRICK RUDOLF VAN ELLENCE m. CATHERINE ESTERHUISEN.
ELIZABETH MARIA VAN ELLENCE m. BATHOLOMEUS SCHONKEN. Then JOHANNA MARIA
SCHONKEN m. WILLIAM ANDERSON in 1806, and he and a colleague were the first
to establish a mission station at Klaarwater, later Griquatown, north of the
Orange River, I think, under the auspices of the London Missionary Society.
(See "They were South Africans" by John Bond) I hope this is of interest.
