I believe you are correct. Ancestor is anyone from whom you have a direct
descent.

Another possibility for family founder would be progenitor, i.e. South
African progenitor (progenitrix, progenitors). I think it is accurate and
clear and is the term I prefer to use.

And even then there would have had to be intermarriage in subsequent
generations to claim a descent from all four.
