Geoff,

You might try writing to St. George's Cathedral in Cape Town, asking for
transcripts. Who knows?

In any event, as someone else told you, these registers are on microfilm,
available at LDS Family History Centers, but often not in South Africa.

If you cannot find these films, let me know. They are available locally to
me.

I am most interested in the records before 1820. For civilians and
"residents", these are on Film 1295052. This is the register of the "Colonial
Chaplain".

I did not realize until recently that there is another register, that of the
"Military Chaplain", Film 1295055.

THIS IS IMPORTANT: The British had many soldiers stationed at the Cape, with
their wives and families. Some of these soldiers (Powrie, Dalgleish, Deacon
...) stayed on as settlers. However Peter Philip, in his book "British
Residents at the Cape 1795-1819", did not include the events and people
recorded by the Military Chaplain.

So, for example, my ancestor, Robert Powrie, does not appear in Philip's book.
However, he was married in Cape Town, and his first child, James, was born
and baptised there. These events are recorded in the Military Chaplain's
Register. Some families (Dalgleish, for example) have entries in both
registers.
