Hi Adelbert,
I have access to a Nikon Coolpix995 camera and I have started using
it to copy documents at the archive. It works exceptionally well and if
I use a high resolution I can blow the image up to about A3 and still
see good detail. I will send you another E-Mail off-list with one of my
images attached for you to see.

I must try a camera again. I tried a digital camera a few years ago
for the
Death Notice Index Project but the resolution was just not quite good
enough
to capture large amounts of data. It worked sufficiently well if
someone
wanted information from a few records but not well enough to do many
pages.

I also tried a normal film camera. That worked quite a bit better but
would
have been extremely expensive to do all the pages. Black & White film
produces the best results but then I must find someone who could
develop it
for me at a reasonable price. I have a negative scanner with which I
could
scan in the negatives so we do not need to print the photos we take.
The
scanner can not handle microfilm because you would have to cut the film
into
lengths of 6-8 pages each.

If anyone does have a relatively new digital camera and could take a
photo
or two from a hand written manuscript and send it on to me I would be
interested to see if the newer cameras have improved sufficiently.
The
pages in the registers are slightly bigger than the modern A4 so
ideally the
test page should be about that size.

Greetings

Adelbert

Hi Adelbert and List,
I was just wondering, Adelbert, if it would be possible to capture the
Cemetery Board information with a digital camera so that files could
then be sent electronically for keyboarding off site. If that is
possible, people like me, not in South Africa could participate and it
might take some of the pressure off those of you in the Cape Town
area.
I recently received from Tessa King a digital image taken by a digital
camera of my great grandmother's death notice. It was easily readable.
Just a thought....
I'll be sending you the next file before the end of the week. Kathy
