Derek's suggestion of Reuters is likely to be correct. However, there is
another possibility.

My gran always said that a member of her husband's family covered the Boer
war for Reuters. Shortly after I started my family history, about 3 or 4
years ago, with nothing more to go on than the name of HANDS I rang Reuters
in London, England. A very helpful archivist checked out their old
correspondents, but with no luck. However, he did suggest that he might be
a stringer. A sort of freelance journalist paid by measuring the printed
column with a piece of string to calculate payment. If I remember
correctly, they did not have a list of stringers.

Addendum 1. Last week Charles Eustace HANDS, my second cousin three times
removed, was identified as the journalist. He actually worked for The Daily
Mail, in London, England. And yes he did cover the Boer War.

Addendum 2. Charles Eustace HANDS was first cousin to Sir Harry HANDS who
married Aletta Catherine MYBURGH, who many people on this list, kindly gave
me information last week.
